Wellness for all is a goal of mine. I am here to tell the stories that bring people together. And together we can create wellness for all. Even if the scope seems overwhelming to change, people can come together and make a difference when they know they have another viable option.
And the scope is huge! When I think about wellness for all, it really is more than just the availability of good wellness plans and single-payer health-care. It is our relationships, our media, our institutions, our schools, our environment, our monetary system and even our deeply held personal beliefs which influence our wellness. Can we afford to spend time caring about ourselves our kids our friends, our species, our planet? At some point if we are going to get well we face being holistic, humanitarian and empathic enough to deal with a cultural redesign. So I have been asking myself: What is the best way to envision a sustainable culture?
I have a very active mind, and I spend a lot of time thinking about the possible directions I will go in my life. I think about what my friends will accomplish and about our relationships. Where they will go in their lives? On a larger scale I think about the emerging trends toward a sustainable culture which lift my spirits and I get all analytical with my highly technical friends and model out what it will take to create a sustainable culture more consciously. More than all that I feel this sense of passion and motivation to connect people together who I feel have such brilliant gifts to share that may be pieces of a sustainable culture.
Are we too busy to redesign our broken systems, institutions and habits?
How can we come to agreement on tough issues?
How are we going to pay our rent and our bills, feed the starving kids, deal with urban sprawl, clean up our environment, have a sense of self-worth and live happy lives? What does it take to feed all of humanity and clothe us and give us homes and excellent health-care? How do we as a species learn how to regulate ourselves and come into balance with the eco-system?
What is really going on with our economy?
How are we doing at creating opportunities to accept each other and love one another? How can one person even a compassionate person make a difference? These are questions that require more than lip service. Their are actually technical answers to these emotionally charged issues. I have been looking to create groups for a long time to help my community and I have found issues with power struggles and ego and competition have gotten in the way.
Well I believe their is an answer if not several for these questions. When I first heard about Dynamic Governance, or Sociocracy, I was skeptical. But as I have gone deeper into understanding what it is and what it has already accomplished as a means for decision making and governance I have become more and more intrigued. In particular I have been impressed with meeting John Buck. Can this method actually work? Am I someone who can help make a difference?
I care about my friends and family , and I am seeking a deeper connection to my greater family. I bless my food. I give thanks to a power greater than my ego. I do my best to inspire people to come together and create something fulfilling.
I am so desirous of an efficient and successful means to envision together and make choices together to agree and have consent together! People with a common humanitarian goal are capable of great achievements.
One thing is clear about envisioning sustainable culture: it requires a lot of participation and insight. I have had visions of what a Utopian world would be like since I was a child. And the last thing we need is people getting attached to single persons version of a Utopia! I know we can do better as we come together and share our insights. And there is always another step. I am not aiming for perfection. I am aiming for what our next step is that is a whole lot better than where we have been. We live in a real world, and visionaries are often looked at as dreamers. So in light of this, I choose to envision with my eyes open. I believe that whatever we come up with we will eventually outgrow that too as a species. And that as an individual my vision has less scope than if I can invite other visionaries working toward a common goal to envision together. I believe Sociocracy to be a brilliant new method to harness collective wisdom with consent quickly and more fairly than majority rule.
I reject the lone-ranger-visionary approach.
I advocate online crowd-sourcing, and Sociocracy to empower vision with insight, depth and discernment.
I see other visionary’s works not as stand alone dreams to be scrutinized, but rather as invitations to collaborate. If there is something I don’t like or do not understand about another’s vision, I can ask what function that aspect of the vision serves and if they are open to input or collaboration on that aspect.
It is in this light that I invite you to look at the Venus Project and the movie Zeitgeist II addendum. For those of you who have seen it already check out the Zeitgeist Movement Orientation.
My additions to this vision would be to emphasize interfaith collaboration and acceptance and add Sociocracy to the interdisciplinary groups. I was raised in 5 religions and everyone was pretty convinced their beliefs were “right”. I learned how to make up my own mind and am better off for having been exposed to many different kinds of beliefs. Their are groups called sociocracy circles eachwith their own name in the Seattle area now forming who are studying sociocracy for various applications or just to learn about sociocracy itself. And there is a group which helps organize sociocratic groups in Seattle called “Next Step Together“.
